if you want beauty

then fall is the answer. and so is this, camille utterback's wonderful, lovely, thoughtful, lyrical text rain. (watch the quicktime documentation.) letters fall on your body and your body tells the letters how to make a word, a phrase, a line of poetry.

I used this as a writing prompt for my ninth graders. It was alternately fantastic and not ("pointless" is a favorite word which makes my insides quiver). I use this site a lot for that actually--inviting my classes to think.

It also got me thinking about beautiful things. Beautiful things that don't serve a specific function, and how that's what everyone in a society is working for: to have enough time to think/play/enjoy.

Which is what the sketch project is all about I guess.

Thanks so much.
