"paths are made by walking"

by mai yamashita and naoto kobayashi, japanese artists based in berlin, who were shared with me by my own berliner.

"in order to determine whether [paths are made by walking] was actually true, yamashita and kobayashi kept running in a park for 5 days. in the time-lapse movie compiled from digital photographs, a path the shape of infinity gradually emerges as we move with high-speed."

ah!!!! i love this so much. thomas hardy called them "ley lines"--the paths that are trampled down over time by hundreds of feet. even if grass has overgrown them they still exist beneath it all. and doesn't it all come down to making, upkeeping, and discovering paths?

OH.MY.GOSH. this is magical.
perhaps our paths are, appropriately, infinte, managing to exist even if the grass has overgrown them. this makes me want to step out into the world and walk and walk until burr my feet into the earth.
this is so beautiful - thanks for sharing.

i know!!! and such a beautiful thing about it, and the reason it was shared with me in the first place: it is the 2 of these individuals walking together which forms the infinity sign. they form it together - beautiful, no? :)
