The Function of Art/1

(this is one of my favorite eduardo galeano pieces)

Diego had never seen the sea. His father, Santiago Kovadloff, took him to discover it.
They went south.
The ocean lay beyond high sand dunes, waiting.
When the child and his father finally reached the dunes after much walking, the ocean exploded before their eyes.
And so immense was the sea and its sparkle that the child was struck dumb by the beauty of it.
And when he finally managed to speak, trembling, stuttering, he asked his father:
"Help me to see!"

Yes! That last line, I love it. It gives me chills. Eduardo Galeano's work is so packed with wisdom and beauty--I don't know how he does it.

the title of this post is so utterly perfect. if there ever was a function to art, it must be to explode before our eyes, to offer up something so immense that it strikes us dumb.

oh my, dear amy, it's been a while since i've been on this blog but i am feeling overwhelmed (in such a good way) by the number of new posts and the immensities they contain. what lovely lovely work you are doing - i can't wait to read through them!

i think part of our staying charmed conversation hinges greatly on this idea of "help me to see"--how this plea both forces us to look at things that we cannot comprehend, and then turn, graspingly, to another, to connect, if anything through a simple, trembling phrase.
