i'm in the middle of writing a series of flash essays on cities i might have loved, which got me thinking of cities i full on, head over the heels, lustily loved. london is one of those cities. i came across jason hawkes' wonderful blog the big picture a little while ago and it is always inspiring. the following is a series of photos he took of london from a helicopter at night. and they are stunning.
what is a city you have loved and why?

I loved Stockholm. No city comes close to its beauty. The water, the people, the history.
It stunning.
you're right - so very stunning. i love that you're a) writing flash essays (which is a form i know you're compatible with and often yields such delicious results) and b) remembering the places that you have loved and been shaped by.
there was a time, a long time ago, that i drove into a beautiful sea-side escape called portofino on italy's amalfi coast, and i was fourteen and wearing a floral shift dress, and my italian aunt weaved flowers into my hair and we walked on a path covered in moss and the sweet fragrance of growing and i told myself that i was in the most beautiful place in the world and spent the evening trying to soak in the sacredness of that fact.
maybe it was all charm, and maybe it was just the moment, but it was, for me, the most magical place in the universe.
oh so many! but truly, oxford. because no city has more beautiful people in a condensed space, and no condensed space is so beautifully packed with romantic old stone and gardens... it is a city that literally inspires me to be more intelligent :) i am completely in love with it. sigh.
(and lia, oh! portofino! oh! the amalfi coast! my memories there are some of my best.)
how badly do i want to travel and go to all these beautiful places? how have we all not talked about the amalfi coast before!? that is seriously one of my favorite places on earth!
